Concept Art for The Cross, Gattaca Helmer Andrew Niccols Next Film

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 9:14 AM | From /Film
As we've reported earlier this year, Andrew Niccol's next movie will be The Cross, starring Orlando Bloom, Olga Kurylenko, John Goodman and Vincent Cassel. The $24m 'sci-fi escape story' is in production now in Australia, and is said to return Niccol to the sort of serious science fiction approach that characterized Gattaca and his script for The Truman Show. Now we've got some concept art from designer Jean-Vinzent Puzos that shows a bit of what we can expect from the film. The Quiet Earth has the art; I've reproduced only a couple shots, and you can see the rest by visiting their site. The script concerns a border, at least in the most obvious plot-oriented terms. The art we're seeing now seems to mostly represent the border town to which Orlando Bloom and his character's younger brother come in search of passage to a new life. The military influence is impossible ... Read Article

Toronto in 60 Seconds: Friday, September 11, 2009

Cinematical's Toronto in 60 Seconds

Key Screenings. And away we go! The Toronto International Film Festival got underway on Thursday, as official opener Creation landed with a painful thud. Reaction was more positive for Lars von Trier's Antichrist (except for the guy who vomited on fellow attendees during the screening) and Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces, according to Eugene Hernandez at indieWIRE, who also noted that Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, Willem Dafoe, and Penelope Cruz (plus the lovely Amanda Seyfried, above) appeared in support of their wide-ranging films, not to mention scantily-clad men and women at different functions.

The first full day of screenings found Anne Thompson gushing over the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man ("Utterly assured, personal, serious, sad and very funny"). George Clooney (staring, above) and Jeff Bridges received ovations for The Men Who Stare at Goats, tweeted a Twitter user; however, Karina Longworth recoiled: "Its vacuity actually seems offensive" compared to Lu Chuan's City of Life and Death, dealing with the tragedy in Nanking, China in 1937.

Our Coverage. As our writers on the ground scramble to hit all the choicest press and public screenings, and somehow find time to write in between dashing from one theater to the next, reviews have begun to filter in. Written by Diablo Cody and starring Megan Fox, Jennifer's Body "substitutes hipster credibility for emotional currency," says Todd Gilchrist. Directed by Jason Reitman and starring George Clooney, Up in the Air is "brisk, funny, and not enslaved to genre conventions," declares Eugene Novikov. And Erik Davis presented a TIFF Exclusive: the poster for indie flick Kirot, with Olga Kurylenko as a gun-toting mother / assassin.

Wolverine 2 (2012)

Monday, August 31, 2009 2:28 AM | From Celluloid & Cigarette Burns

Hugh Jackman has confirmed that the Japanese storyline will be based on the Frank Miller and Chris Claremont celebrated 1982 Wolverine mini-series. Of course Jackman will return as both star and producer. The interesting news that there might be a chance the best element of X-Men Origins, Liev Schreiber could return as Sabertooth. Jackman has mentioned that there might be a blending of the Japanese stories. Also that we could see many new mutants involved. I really hope they aren't future X-Men characters just added to for cameo's sake. He boasts this sequel as being the sexiest Wolverine film yet. That confirms the multpule love stories that were featured in the comic.

While a director has yet to be announced, Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects) has been hired to pen the screenplay. It's a good start to fix the issues that angered most fans with the first solo outing. Now let's hope 20th Century Fox hires a talented director and gives them the space they need to make an entertaining movie. The Japanese saga involves Logan traveling to Japan to rekindle with a past lover. Only to find out she was unwillingly engaged to a business man. Her father Lord Shingen who orders the marrige does everything in his power to keep Wolverine from his daughter. Later when Mariko Yashida and Logan attempt a marriage Viper and Silver Samurai break it up.

Yakuza enforcer Goro would make great human adversary, considering he can only be killed by a dead man. Along with 500 year old ninja clan The Hand, which is an never ending wave of deadly ninja warriors. Logan get's a bit of assistance from Yukio, who he also has a romance with.

Casting Thoughts:

Maggie Q (Die Hard 4) as Yukio

Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill, Battle Royale) as Mariko Yashida

Hiroyuki Sanada (Sunshine, Last Samurai) as Kenuichio Harada aka Silver Samurai

Olga Kurylenko (Centurion, Quantum of Solace) as Ophelia Sarkissian aka Viper

Dennis Joseph O'Neill as Daken Akihiro: Wolverine's long lost son from his marriage to Itsu during his years in Japan. Winter Solider kills Itsu and Daken is given the impression that Logan killed his mother leaving him for dead. When he grows up searches for his father to take revenge. Like his father Daken has the healing factor and bone claws.

Fox to Try Again With Hitman

Thursday, June 25, 2009 4:28 AM | From CanMag.Com
Though Hitman didn't do well with er, anybody, 20th Century Fox has no problem setting their sites on it and taking another shot. Their record is horrible when it comes to adapting er, anything, but they got to be due.

Fox Targeting a Hitman Sequel
Fox has brought on screenwriter Kyle Ward to write a script for the movie that opens the title character, Agent 47, at a low point. The film will then stay true to story elements seen in Hitman 5. Haven't played the fifth installment just yet? Well, that's because it doesn't arrive until late 2010.

To be honest, I don't care what story they base it off of, just as long as they bring back Olga Kurylenko and throw in some gratuitous nudity. Those scenes I did respect. Lots of hotness. Yes - More of that. Read Article

Fox Moving Forward With Hitman Sequel

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 4:35 AM | From The Moving Picture
Despite striking out with both audiences and critics Hitman managed to rake in over $100 million at the worldwide box-office on a modest $24 million budget, and thus Fox looks to be moving ahead with a sequel. According to the folks over at IESB, the studio has signed on Kyle Ward to write the script for the next installment of the action series. Apparently Ward is one of Hollywoods hottest, young writers, having written the upcoming thriller Fiasco Heights and the video game adaptation Kane & Lynch. The first film, which was based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, centered on a gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 who is hired by a group known as 'The Organization' which ultimately entangles him in a political conspiracy. He is then pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Russia and Eastern Europe. It was directed by Xavier Gens from a script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Swordfish) and starred Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko, Robert Knepper, Ulrich Thomsen and Michael Offei. No word yet if the original cast will return for part 2. Read Article

Looks Like Hitman Might Be Back To His Old Killing Ways

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 9:56 PM | From Latino Review
I liked the Hitman movie. It was action packed, had a story and Timothhy Olyphant played the role as it should have been played - as a cold hearted bastard. The movie looks great on Blu-Ray, we have sword fights, hand to hand fights, headshots, gun fights and Olga Kurylenko naked. What more do you want in an action movie?IESB has exclusive news on a sequel being written for Hitman. Here's more:IESB has confirmed that 20th Century Fox has hired writer Kyle Ward to pen the script for the sequel to Hitman!  Ward is one of Hollywood's hottest, young writers. He wrote Kane and Lynch currently set up over at Lionsgate starring Bruce Willis with a potential start date of later this year. He also penned Fiasco Heights for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes over at Universal.Click on the cool ass UK poster to read the rest. Question is, are Timothhy and Olga returning for the sequel? If  Olga doesn't, no biggie. Plenty of chicks they can use. But if Timothy doesn't return to the role, I probably won't be interested. Source: IESB Read Article

Are Predators After Neil Marshall?

Thursday, June 11, 2009 11:42 PM | From The Moving Picture
The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have posted a rumor that says Neil Marshall, director of Dog Soldiers, Descent and Doomsday, is in talks to helm Foxs Predator reboot, Predators. Robert Rodriguezs Troublemaker Studios is producing the project and up until now it was believed that Rodriguez would also direct the film. That may still be the case, seeing as this is just a rumor, but BD says the scoop is coming from a 100% reliable source. They also stress that Marshall isnt signed on, just in talks. The first Predator hit the screen in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Kevin Peter Hall. The story followed an elite team on a mission to rescue hostages from a guerrilla group in Central America. It was directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard). A sequel starring Danny Glover opened in 1990 followed by the mash-up flicks Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem several years later. While the original only featured one Predator, the reboot will up the number of the popular alien species. Marshall is currently in post-production on Centurion, an action-adventure film about a group of Roman soldiers who fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack. It stars Dominic West (The Wire) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace). Read Article

Soon to theatres: "Max Payne" - New images in!

We have some new images for 20th Century Fox's "Max Payne" starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, Ludacris, Donal Logue, Chris O'Donnell, Joel Gordon, Kate Burton, Rico Simonini.

Wahlberg returns to the big screen after M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" didn't quite live up to its title. This one, is a whole new breed and Wahlberg looks set to bring in some decent numbers for the studio.

Newbie writer Beau Thorne makes his writing debut based on the Rockstar video game of the same title by Remedy Entertainment and 3-D Realms Entertainment, "Max Payne." At the helm is John Moore, last directing the 2006 remake of "The Omen." Moore has a good history with Fox with "Omen," "Behind Enemy Lines" and "Flight of the Phoenix" all with the studio.

See the images!

What's this about?

Max Payne is a maverick cop - a mythic anti-hero - determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murders of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmare journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal.

Oscar® nominee Mark Wahlberg (The Departed) stars as Max Payne, a man who has little regard for rules - and nothing to lose - as he investigates a series of mysterious murders that could be tied to the death of his wife and child. But there are massive forces, both real and beyond imagination, that are conspiring to keep the devastating truth hidden - and Max forever silenced.

Joining Wahlberg in MAX PAYNE are Mila Kunis as Mona Sax, a beautiful Russian mobster and assassin; Olga Kurylenko (who stars in the upcoming James Bond film Quantum of Solace) as Natasha, Mona's thrill-seeking younger sister; Chris "Ludacris" Bridges as Internal Affairs Detective Jim Bravura; and Beau Bridges as Max's mentor, B.B.

MAX PAYNE is directed by John Moore (The Omen, Behind Enemy Lines) from a screenplay by Beau Thorne, a recent graduate of the University of Texas film program. The film is produced by Julie Yorn (Bride Wars), Scott Faye and John Moore.
