Fox Searchlight Pictures will release their Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Duvall starrer "Crazy Heart" on December 16th, in time for an awards run.
Scott Cooper makes his feature-length directorial debut on the project. The story follows a boozing and broken-down country singer Bad Blake (Bridges) who finds redemption with the aid of a young journalist (played by Gyllenhaal). Cooper wrote the screenplay which is based on the novel by Thomas Cobb.
Bridges can be seen this weekend in Overture Films' "The Men Who Stare At Goats" alongside George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey.
Cooper also produces with Rob Carliner, Judy Cairo and T Bone Burnett.

There's a poster as well as images in the "Crazy Heart" group. The film opens on December 16th in limited areas and stars Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Duvall.
Scott Cooper directs from his own screeplay based on the novel written by Thomas Cobb. Original music is by T. Bone Burnett.

Is Crazy Heart going to be this year's The Wrestler? Fox Searchlight is certainly hoping so... they've even inserted the phrase "broken-down" into the movie's synopsis. The film stars Jeff Bridges as an alcoholic country singer named Bad Blake, who takes one last shot at redemption after meeting a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is trying to get to the real story about his life. Okay, so maybe there's a little bit of Anvil in there too?
The movie is the directorial debut of Scott Cooper, who up until now was best known as an actor (his previous credits include AMC's western mini-series Broken Trail). Fox Searchlight was originally going to release Crazy Heart in the spring but decided to move up the release date in order to make a push for the Oscars. I'm sure we'd all love to see Jeff Bridges win one at this point in his career, but the field is looking crowded this year. What do you think, could this be the role that puts Bridges over the top? Yesterday we saw the first poster and images from Crazy Heart, Fox Searchlight's film which stars Jeff Bridges as "a washed-up, alcoholic country singer who gets his life back on track thanks to a reporter-type (Maggie Gyllenhaal)." I've heard from a couple of people in the know that Bridges will be a contender for Best Actor with his performance. And lets not forget that Robert Duval and Colin Farrell round out the cast.
Searchlight has now released the first trailer for the film, which you can watch embedded after the jump. The story is drawing strong comparisons to Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, and after watching the trailer, you will definitely see why. The first trailer for Crazy Heart, starring Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal, has arrived online and you can see it below.
With Oscar season in full swing, Bridges has suddenly emerged as one of the strongest contenders to nab a trophy with a performance that those who've seen the film describe as easily one of the best of the year.
In what sounds like a little like The Wrestler with a country music background, the movie finds Bridges as "Bad" Blake, a broken-down singer/songwriter who's lived through too many marriages, too many years on the road and too many drinks.
But a chance at salvation arrives in the shape of Jean (Gyllenhaal), a music journalist who discovers the man inside the brittle shell and helps him get back to performing - and living.
Crazy Heart has snuck up on everyone - shot last year, it hasn't shown up in any festivals but now has serious awards heat.

Fox Searchlight has debuted the trailer for Scott Cooper's Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal as well as Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall. This is the indie film that a month ago no one even knew about. Then they screened it for Oscar bloggers, who loved it and proclaimed that Bridges has a shot at winning Oscar, and then Searchlight set it for release on December 11th just in time for the Oscars. Here's the official trailer for the film which, to be quite frank, looks amazing. From this trailer alone, I'd say it looks like Jeff Bridges will win. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm already sold, it looks like the next Wrestler or Once.

Crazy Heart Poster, The Oscar Contender Earning Comparisons to The Wrestler
When I reported on Crazy Heart in 2008, the film was affiliated with the CMT network, yet drew my interest with a cast that included Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Robert Duval. All of these actors excel in roles steeped in the weathering of life and excess, and this tale of, "a washed-up, alcoholic country singer (Bridges) who gets his life back on track thanks to a reporter-type (Gyllenhaal)," obviously played to those strengths on the surface. The addition to the cast of Colin Farrell, forever in our good graces for In Bruges, made this a must-see no matter what.
Well, here we are in the fourth quarter of '09 and the performance by Bridges is in the thick of Oscar buzz, drawing early comparisons to Mickey Rourke's unflinching, redemptive arc in The Wrestler.
