Maya Indie Film Series to Begin in Los Angeles
Audiences in Los Angeles will have a very different set of movie options at the Nuart Theatre as of tomorrow, when the Maya Indie Film series begins. For seven days mainstream U.S. cinema will be fogotten in favor of Spanish-language and Latin-focused films, the likes of which Maya Entertainment CEO, Moctesuma Esparza, used to experience growing up in East Los Angeles.
"Getting attention for both Spanish-language and American Latino movies in this crowded marketplace is very challenging, very difficult, and it's also very expensive," said Esparza to the LA Times this week.
As part of Maya's efforts to serve the Latino cinema community and its audiences, the film series will feature everything from lesser-known Latino comedies and crime stories to more familiar fair like The Line (La Linea), starring Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia.
According to the LA Times, the Maya Indie Film series will also feature the following:
Elsewhere on the series' spectrum of offerings is "Máncora," an erotically charged Peruvian road-trip drama; "Once Upon a Time in Rio," a love story matching a poor Brazilian youth and a rich lawyer's daughter; "Vicious Circle," a U.S. Latino love story set in Venice Beach; "Bad Guys," with Kate del Castillo, about novice hoods caught between the cops and the Mafia; and the Mexican "Sultanes del Sur," about a bank heist gone sour.
Once through with its run in LA, the film series will then tour the states, screening in San Diego, Chicago, Miami, and New York.
