In case you've forgotten, Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) is hard at work directing Piranha 3-D, a remake of the 1978 comedy horror film about a batch of mutated, and highly ravenous, piranhas that are unwittingly unleashed upon the public. DreadCentral recently got their hands on a couple of stills from the production and they look bloody good.
The remake promises to "maintain the fun and thrilling aspects of the original film but look forward to upping the ante with a modern-day twist," according to Bob Weinstein of Dimension Films.

Jaws... lots and lots of jaws. From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology. A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself."

CLOSE THE BEACHES AND CALL THE MAYOR!!
Wednesday, August 26, 2009 11:56 AM | From Fangoria
Great White sharks have been sighted in the beach town of Santa Monica. They are circling The Aero Theater(1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, Ca 90403) on anticipation of Saturday, August 29's JAWS Marathon.
Festivities kick off at 7:30 with Steven Spielberg's JAWS, followed by JAWS 2 and JAWS 3. While originally a 3-D movie, JAWS 3 will be shown in 1-D. But with Lea Thompson in a bikini, a human pyramid of hot chicks and Lou Gossett as an African American character who DOESN'T get eaten, who needs 3-D?!?

Few times to do find ourselves speechless here at Dread Central. This is one of those times. Hold on to your asses JAWS fanatics. Something incredibly fucking wicked is headed our way!
From the Press Release Mike Schultz has been busy making sharks. Extremely busy. A Missouri 911 operator by night and an artisan by day, Mike's newest rendition is scheduled to be released sometime next summer to coincide with the anniversary of 'JAWS'.
Due to access of far better reference material, this is an entirely NEW and far more accurate sculpt than Schultz or anyone else has done thus far. Years of research and passion went into making this the ultimate BRUCE maquette fans worldwide have been waiting for. No detail, tooth, or scar was ignored in the process. Spielberg's art director Joe Alves has also been brought into the project as a consultant to ensure its attention to detail.
According to Schultz, "This model represents the more detailed and slimmer 'platform Bruce', post Shark City build, but pre-waterlogged/damaged Bruce depicted later in the film. The skin accuracy and detail is staggering, and when I stare at the finished model even from a distance it looks like the huge mechanical shark with it's urethane skin stretched over a tube steel frame during production of the film. Which is exactly the kind of extreme museum quality accuracy I was striving for.
I'm very excited about this release for myself, and my fellow fans. This is a big big fish, and a bigger project with several people involved behind the scenes. BRUCE NTT was made by a finfan...for finfans that know and love this film and for anyone just discovering its artistry and mystique, or simply for someone who's not the biggest fan but wants the ultimate conversation piece".
Licensing by Universal Studios as a very limited edition official 'Jaws' collectible is planned. This Bruce NTT piece is a full length nose to tail maquette and dwarfs Sideshow's latest rendition at a little over 3 feet. Further information and photos to be released over the summer. Manufacturer/Distributors are still being sourced. Discussions with HK based HotToys are underway.

Most historians agree that Jaws was the first "summer movie." It was the first time that studios made the connection that summer = summer vacation = kids home from school with disposable allowances. It was also a movie that actually took place during the summer and on the beach. It was also a brilliantly simple film that could be advertised almost exclusively by word of mouth and by a great poster. Hence, it practically invented the term "blockbuster." But just because the studios officially established the summer movie season from then on doesn't mean that people didn't go to the movies during the summer before that. Here's my list of seven great summer releases from the days before the hype.
1. North by Northwest Released July 17, 1959 Hitchcock released quite a few of his great films in the summer -- including Strangers on a Train, Rear Window and Psycho -- but I like to think that this big, lightweight, but precision-perfect thriller is his best "summer movie," due to its general brightness and upbeat tone and its impressive collection of picturesque locations. (It's like a mini-vacation from your seat.) And, on a hot summer day, Cary Grant in his sleek gray suit is the epitome of cool.
FROM MTV MOVIES: You can keep your namby-pamby heroes, with their chiseled jaws, steely blue eyes and frost-tipped hairdos. The rest of us prefer to root for villains those devious, cackling, bloodthirsty beings who exist solely to take over the world and ruin the good guy’s day in the process.
Once again, the MTV Movie [...]
Apparently director Alexandre Aja is trying to pay homage to "Jaws" by casting Richard Dreyfuss in his upcoming 3-D remake of "Piranha." SPOILERS AHEAD:
