Cinematical's Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 11/17

Star Trek

In rebooting the franchise, J.J. Abrams faced the daunting challenge of pleasing long-time Trekkies and roping in new viewers who think 'Live long and prosper' is a slogan for an insurance company. This is not your father's Star Trek, but he'd probably like it too (begrudgingly). Buy it. Also on Blu-ray (see Todd Gilchrist's review for more on that edition.)

Bruno
I'm not a big fan of the 'ridicule the clueless' school of humor, so I turn to Cinematical's review by Todd Gilchrist: "curiously ineffective, a sort of middling effort that fails to liberate itself from the stereotypes that provide the character's foundations, even if it also doesn't deliberately or harmfully reinforce them." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

My Sister's Keeper
Despite a relentless barrage of scenes evidently designed with the sole goal of jerking tears, Nick Cassavetes' My Sister's Keeper did not make me cry. It is, however, one of the most glorious-looking terminal cancer pictures I've ever seen. Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric, Abigail Breslin, and Alec Baldwin star in a film I found entirely unsatisfying. (See my review for more.) In addition, fans of the novel by Jodi Picoult may not appreciate the changed ending. Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

Also out: How to Be (with Robert Pattinson), Wild Child (with Emma Roberts).

After the jump: Indies on DVD, more Blu-ray, and Collector's Corner.

What IF Willem Dafoe Had Been Batman

Thursday, October 29, 2009 8:07 AM | From Latino Review
I just came across something that would have made for a very different "Batman" movie back in 1989: According to the actor himself, none other than Willem Dafoe was approached to be the Bat for Tim Burton."Very early, they talked to me about playing Batman," Dafoe told MTV News."I hate to spread these things because unless you remember it well, you're stoking the fires of bulls---," said the actor. "But I remember [it]. I've had my brush with these things."Man, I love Dafoe and all, but I cannot see him as Batman. He would've have made a good Joker, yes...an even better, more menacing Joker than Nicholson's take at the time, but he doesn't exactly have suave, good-looking billionaire going for him. Not that Michael Keaton was a good Bruce Wayne either, but that has as much to do with the way the character was written back then as with Keaton's appearance and portrayal. You know what else is funny? I can name you at least three people who I think would've been a better Batman/Bruce Wayne circa 1988 or whenever Keaton was cast (Mel Gibson, Kurt Russel, Jason Patric) but I couldn't name you one other actor working right now who I think would be better than Christian Bale. That's just perfect casting right there. What do you guys think?Source: MTV Read Article

When you get a look at this pic of Zoe Saldana from the set of THE LOSERS, you can understand why I look forward to it. Saldana is playing the role of Aisha, who joins the crew of LOSERS, Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), Jensen (Chris Evans), and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada). All the members join together to take down mastermind Max (Jason Patric) who organized the assassination of... Read More... Read Article

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Joins Red Dawn, Angles for Lobo

Monday, September 14, 2009 12:35 PM | From /Film
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is one of those actors who always seems on the cusp of really breaking out. His roles on Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy led to a turn as The Comedian in Watchmen, in which he was one of the highlights. He's currently shooting the Sylvain White-directed The Losers alongside Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Jason Patric. And now he'll be in the remake of Red Dawn. Speaking to Collider when the site was amongst the crew at the not-so-secret set visit to The Losers, Morgan said he was taking the Powers Boothe role in the Red Dawn remake. Not a huge role, but a significant one. The news was later confirmed (or simply picked up, depending on your view) by Variety. The trade says Morgan will be "the leader of the U.S. Special Forces team who discovers the teens' stronghold while behind enemy lines." In the original, ... Read Article

Jason Patric cast as Villain in THE LOSERS

Friday, August 14, 2009 8:14 PM | From GeekTyrant

Jason Patric is a fantastic actor that in my opinion is underrated and isn’t used enough in film, so it’s also nice to hear when he is cast in a movie. He has joined the cast of the Warner Bros, Dark Castle film The Losers, which is an adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comic book. He [...] Read Article

Jason Patric Joins The Losers

Friday, August 14, 2009 1:14 PM | From /Film
Jason Patric is an actor I'd like to see work a lot more. He's more choosy than most, and dismissive of a lot of mainstream fare. (Yeah, despite having Speed 2 on the resume.) So Variety's report that he's joined the cast of The Losers, directed by Sylvain White, is pretty significant. His presence as the film's bad guy just upped my interest in the project by a huge margin. Patric will play Max, "a CIA agent who has gone off the rails and sets up the title characters, a black ops team, to be killed." He'll be opposite Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba. Quite a serious cast for what sounds at first like a pulpy, possibly even silly film. Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt wrote the script based on the Vertigo comic series by Andy Diggle and Jock. As the plot of the series ... Read Article

Jason Patric Grudgingly Takes On Comic Book Villain

Friday, August 14, 2009 10:49 AM | From Cinema Blend
Jason Patric, who let us never forget starred in Speed 2: Cruise Control, seems to be holding his nose as he takes a role in The Losers, the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC comic book. Announcing that he'd be playing a rogue CIA agent in the film, Patric told Variety "Let's face it, the geeks have inherited the world, and if you want to be a player in this system, you have to be willing to do some of this." ... Trade News! Super Ruling On Superman, Patric Is A Loser, Wall Street Gets A Mulligan

Friday, August 14, 2009 12:14 AM | From Latino Review
Time for some fun trade news wrapped in one convenient easy to read article. And of course, in regular Guapo fashion, yo asses get a special music video for making it to the end. If you skip to the music video first, then you have missed out on three news pieces that could have won a future game of Trivia Pursuit: Worthless Movie News Knowledge.First up is some Superman court battle news. The whole thing is so trivial and stupid. Yes, I understand the case, but the whole splitting up of the various things each party gets the rights to is hilarious. You'll see what I mean when you're done with the article:Warner Bros. and DC Comics have lost a little more control over the Man of Steel. In an ongoing Federal court battle over Superman, Judge Stephen Larson ruled Wednesday that the family of the superhero's co-creator, Jerry Siegel, has "successfully recaptured" rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips, as well as portions of early Action Comics and Superman comic-books. The ruling is based on the court's finding that these were not "works-made-for-hire" under the Copyright Act. This means the Siegels -- repped by Marc Toberoff of Toberoff & Associates -- now control depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash. The first Superman story was published in 1938 in Action Comics No. 1. For $130, Jerry Siegel and co-creator Joel Schuster signed a release in favor of DC's predecessor, Detective Comics, and a 1974 court decision ruled they signed away their copyrights forever. In 2008, the same court order ruled on summary judgment that the Siegels had successfully recaptured (as of 1999) Siegel's copyright in Action Comics No. 1, giving them rights to the Superman character, including his costume, his alter-ego as reporter Clark Kent, the feisty reporter Lois Lane, their jobs at the Daily Planet newspaper working for a gruff editor, and the love triangle among Clark/Superman and Lois. While ownership of the Man of Steel is one point of all this legal activity, the real issue is money and how much Warner Bros. and DC owe the Siegels from profits they collected from Superman since 1999, when the heirs' recapture of Siegel's copyright became effective. DC owns other elements like Superman's ability to fly, the term kryptonite, the Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen characters, Superman's powers and expanded origins. In a statement, Warner Bros. and DC said, "Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics." The Schuster estate originally did not participate with the Siegels' case because Schuster has no spouse or children. But his estate later won a ruling of a recapture identical to the Siegels, which will be effective in 2013. At that point, the Siegels and Schusters will own the entire copyright to Action Comics No. 1. That will give them the chance to set up Superman pics, TV shows and other projects at another studio. If they want to get a new "Superman" or even "Justice League" pic featuring the superhero, Warner Bros. and DC will be forced to go into production by 2011. So the creators own the characters, while DC owns the powers, the bad guy and Jimmy Olsen. What a fucking mess. You know who loses all of this? We do.Moving on to another comic book property, Jason Patric has signed on to play the villain in the upcoming film adaptation of The Losers comic book. The trades has more:Jason Patric has joined the cast of "The Losers," the Warner Bros./Dark Castle adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comicbook. Patric plays Max, a CIA agent who has gone off the rails and sets up the title characters, a black ops team, to be killed. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba also star. It is the first true villain role and the first comicbook movie for an actor who is usually drawn to dark, edgy, adult-themed fare. Courted by Joel Silver (who produces with Akiva Goldsman), Patric was lured by the chance to work with director Sylvain White. He also decided to plug in with the young geek demo driving the box office these days. "Let's face it, the geeks have inherited the world, and if you want to be a player in this system, you have to be willing to do some of this," Patric acknowledged. "But I wouldn't do 'The Losers' if it wasn't interesting to me as an actor." Patric will not be there to chew the scenery, as some comicbook villains have. Hahaha! "You have to be willing to do some of this." I think what he's really saying is, "I'll get some geek cred, but I still think you're all a bunch of fucktards." Jason be keepin' shit real, yo! Last and certaintly least, another actor has signed for Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. (Story details we broke months ago).Carey Mulligan is coming on board "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps" to play Gordon Gekko's daughter. Mulligan joins Michael Douglas (Gekko), Shia LaBeouf and Frank Langella in the sequel to the 1987 film, to which Josh Brolin is in talks to also join. Mulligan's character is romantically linked to LaBeouf's, a young Wall Street broker on his way up. Shooting to due to start September in New York. Allan Loeb wrote the current script. Ed Pressman, Douglas and Eric Kopeloff are producing. English-actress Mulligan has been gaining heat for her breakthrough performance in "An Education," which Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Oct. 9. While she has appeared in a bit part in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" and has "Brothers" in the can, "Wall Street 2" is her first major studio role. Alrighty, you made it all the way to the end. Let's go back in time and celebrate! I wanna see this music video made into a full length feature film. It's got hot sistas, dinosaurs and ninjas! Get in the pit andSource: Read Article

Jason Patric joins The Losers

Thursday, August 13, 2009 8:56 PM | From Total Film

Jason Patric has been hired to play the villain in Warners' adaptation of The Losers.

He'll play a corrupt, insane CIA agent named Max who sets up the titular black ops team to be slaughtered.

They survive (it'd be a short story otherwise) and come after him.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba are playing members of the team in the film, which is shooting right now with Sylvain White directing.

But from his statement about the casting news, you'd think Patric was doing the world - and geeks everywhere - the biggest favour ever.

"Let's face it, the geeks have inherited the world, and if you want to be a player in this system, you have to be willing to do some of this," Patric tells Variety.

"But I wouldn't do The Losers if it wasn't interesting to me as an actor."

Right. And we suppose you starred in Speed 2: Cruise Control for the same reason?

Excited to see Patric back? Or not so much? Speak!
