Happy 25th Birthday, PG-13 Rating!

Saturday, July 25, 2009 6:49 AM | From Cinematical
For elderly people like me, in our 30s, it's sobering to realize that on any given Friday night, the majority of people in an average American movie theater do not remember a time when the PG-13 rating did not exist. Yes, it was 25 years ago this summer that the Motion Picture Association of America added PG-13 to its roster of ratings, joining G, PG, R, and X (which in 1990 was replaced by NC-17). Perhaps you already know some of the trivia involved. 'Tis no urban legend: Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom really were the catalysts that brought about the new rating, and Steven Spielberg -- who produced one and directed the other -- was the mastermind.

"I created the problem and I also supplied the solution," Spielberg told the Associated Press in 2004. "I invented the rating." Temple of Doom was released May 23, 1984, and horrified parents immediately began complaining that the PG rating was too lax, citing the heart-ripping-out scene in particular. (I'd have cited Kate Capshaw's performance, but I guess that's more "irritating" than "horrifying.") Gremlins, with its microwaved monsters and general bloody mayhem, opened two weeks later, and the uproar grew louder. I remember my aunt, who took my cousin and me to see it (we were 9), saying she thought Stripe's melting at the end was too gross for a PG movie. We just thought it was awesome.

To parents, both films seemed too graphic to be rated PG. Logically, that meant they should have been rated R instead, as that was the only other choice. But they'd be kind of tame compared to other R-rated movies, especially considering the content was aimed at teenagers. Somehow neither rating seemed right.

Question: How Has the PG-13 Rating Changed Over The Years (if at all)?

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 9:14 AM | From /Film
It seems almost quaint today but the PG-13 rating was actually conceived in 1984 at the suggestion of Steven Spielberg: His Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was deemed just a tad too graphic/violent for kids, but not so bad as to warrant an R rating. Since then, the PG-13 branding, which indicates that "Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13," has had a bit of a bumpy road. On this week's episode of the Totally Rad Show, Dan Trachtenberg argues that in a world where movies like Drag Me To Hell are rated PG-13, it becomes virtually irrelevant whether or not a movie is rated PG-13 or R. In other words, it feels like today's standards are pretty slack for PG-13 films, compared with decades ago, and that filmmakers can easily push the envelope. On this week's /Filmcast (which, coincidentally, features Alex Albrecht), I mentioned some of ... Read Article

Captain America (July 22nd 2011)

Monday, May 25, 2009 5:56 AM | From Celluloid & Cigarette Burns

After being deemed unfit for military service during WWII, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. Joe Johnston will direct, he recently helmed the remake of The Wolf Man. Johnston has also worked on Stars Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi, Battlestar Galactica (Original TV Show) and Indiana Jones: Raiders of The Lost Ark & Temple of Doom.

CASTING RUMORS:

Many actors have been rumored for the role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. They include Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, Neal Mcdonough, Aaron Eckhart, and Mark Valley. Also with the awful choices of Matthew Mconaughey and wrestler John Cena. DiCaprio would be my choice since he's the youngest of the group. He's also proven himself a great dramatic/action actor giving great performances in films such as Gangs of New York, Departed, Blood Diamond and Body of Lies.

CASTING THOUGHTS:

Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) as Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull

Mads Mikkelsen (Clash of The Titans) as Baron Helmut Zemo

Ben Barnes (Narnia:Prince Caspian) as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Solider

Hannah Herzsprung (Reader, Baader Meinof Complex) as Sinthia Schmidt, daughter of Red Skull

Our Favorite Summers: 1984

Monday, April 27, 2009 7:35 PM | From Cinematical

Erik Davis ordered me to come up with a new approach to summer movies, and he demanded that the concept be intelligent, engaging, and jam-packed with vowels and consonants. (One out of three isn't bad.) And since I'm a childish movie nerd who had a deep affection for all things nostalgic, my first idea was "Hey, let's have the writers pick their favorite 'movie summer' and write a piece about it." And since my next eleven ideas stunk, he said "Ugh, fine. Do your Favorite Summers thing. But don't forget the vowels."

Nearly all of the Cinematicaleers will be penning their own pieces, but since I like to lead by example (when I'm not leading by guilt), I figured I'd get the ball rolling first. (Special thanks to Box Office Mojo for displaying OLD release dates in very handy fashion.) Also, for the sake of this series, let's say "summer" counts as "May through August," even though May is technically spring and part of September is definitely summer.

5/4 -- The Bounty // Breakin' // Hardbodies // Sixteen Candles -- So which one of these would be the big "Iron Man" release? We got Gibson and Hopkins in a nautical remake; a whole lot of pop-lockin' looneys; a leering sex comedy that helped to kill the sub-genre of mid-'80s sex comedies; and the directorial debut of one John Hughes.

5/11 -- Firestarter // The Natural -- Robert Redford knocking the cover off a baseball and Drew Barrymore immolating George C. Scott. Now THAT's summer!

5/18 -- Finders Keepers // Making the Grade -- A pair of justifiably forgotten farces, yes, both of which I saw theatrically.

5/23 -- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom -- Even back in 1984 Indiana Jones demanded his very own weekend ... one that starts on a Wednesday, no less! I distinctly remember seeing this on the afternoon of opening day, and while I was waiting for Mom to come pick us up, there was a woman BERATING the box office girl. Honest! Something about the heart-tearing scene had upset her small child. And just like that, the PG-13 was born.

New Red Band Clip for I Love You, Man

Thursday, March 12, 2009 12:35 PM | From CanMag.Com
Got a quick media update coming your way for I Love You, Man. Paramount Pictures has released a new clip from the film that focuses entirely on Sydney's "Temple of Doom." No, we're not talking about an Indiana Jones movie here, but a room made for men and men only.

I Love You, Man Red Band Clip
One thing that's great about the formula between Sydney (Jason Segel) and Peter (Paul Rudd), is that they couldn't be more opposite. Peter has been conditioned to being around women, as he has had girlfriends his entire life, while Sydney couldn't be more of a blunt, stereotypical guy. How can this pair survive? Probably going to have to see I Love You, Man come March 20th to figure that out. For now, check out Sydney's jerk off station in the recent clip (via TrailerAddict). Read Article

HOWARD THE DUCK Special Edition DVD Review -- Eli says everyone else can shut the hell up, I love Howard the Duck

Monday, March 9, 2009 7:00 PM | From Collider
Good God, where do I start? Sometimes when you go back and watch something you loved as a child, you realize its just not as good as you remember, and that the rose colored glasses of nostalgia have offered you a warped view of something that maybe wasnt so awesome. (Misfits of Science, I must sadly admit that you are not actually awesome) I have amazingly fond memories of Howard the Duck. I loved it back in 86 when it came out, and I loved the bootlegged VHS copy my brother and I watched repeatedly until it disintegrated in the early nineties (you know you did Jonah, dont try to defend yourself). Oddly enough, this VHS tape also had a bootlegged Temple of Doom, which is still my favorite Indiana Jones movie, even though it is arguably the worst of the first three films. So maybe my taste is questionable in general. Even at the ... Read Article
