Monday, November 9, 2009 3:40 PM | From /Film
We've featured many of artist Eric Tan's creations in past Cool Stuff columns: we've spotlighted his work for past Pixar productions, X-Men, LOST, among other things. Tan has been creating a series of posters for the Indiana Jones film series. You can see his Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom posters in our linked Cool Stuff articles. Last month Disney published new posters from Tan of two of Disney's animated classics, which he created specifically for The Art of Disney Princess book. Tan explains his process on his blog: Little Mermaid came out when I was in high school and reinvigorated the entire Animation studio which influenced me to want to get into field that as a career. Although I found I didn't have the chops for animation, it led me down the path to my current position with Disney and it'll always be one of those films that reminds me of how I fortunate I am ... Indiana Jones 1954

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 8:42 AM | From Joblo.Com
You may remember a while back I posted a rendition of GHOSTBUSTERS 1954, where a talented video mashup artist took footage from a ton of old films and made an old-timey trailer for the movie. Well, he’s back, and this time he’s taking on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, editing clips together to make it look like a '50s serial. It most definitely looks like a much better idea than INDY 5. I’m not sure what’s so inherently cool about these videos, but... Read More... Read Article

Discuss: Have Characters Lost Their Names?

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 2:28 PM | From Cinematical

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones; ??? in 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'

Indiana Jones ... Ferris Bueller ... James T. Kirk ... Harry Potter ... Freddy Krueger ... Sam Witwicky? This summer has certainly seen it's fair share of iconic characters returning to the big screen, most notably in Star Trek and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. And next year we'll see new incarnations of Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street and the titular Alice in Wonderland. More often, though, it seems that memorable characters have been crowded off the stage in favor of interchangeable "types" rotating through a stock collection of cliches. The robots were better defined in Terminator: Salvation and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen than the people. Where have all the great characters created expressly for the screen gone?

True, most of the great movie characters of the past sprang either from real life or the fertile imagination of novelists. Yet Charles Foster Kane, J.J. Gittes, Travis Bickle, Rocky Balboa, Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, and Ferris Bueller were all original characters, even if they were influenced by various literary works. We still see larger-than-life characters that emerge fully-formed from the pages of a novel, like Harry Potter. And independent films are filled with indelible portraits of an incredible range of realistic characters. Why, then, have so few distinctive original characters entered into our popular consciousness from Hollywood studio productions in recent years?

Are Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Bruno the best we can hope for? Why can't we remember any other character's name from this year's crop of popular titles? Are event movies driving memorable characters from the screen in favor of CGI and action sequences? Are great original characters -- not based on a pre-existing property -- gone for good?

Who Are Your Favorite Movie Professors?

Friday, July 10, 2009 10:42 AM | From Cinematical

Clockwise from upper left: Nicolas Cage, Michael Cambon, Harrison Ford, Jerry Lewis, Robin Williams, John Houseman

You can't turn around in a movie without bumping into a professor. If it's not Nicolas Cage as the unlikeliest astrophysicist to be granted tenure at M.I.T. in Knowing, just released on DVD, it's the passel of professors that will undoubtedly be presented in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, due out in theaters next Wednesday. Which kind of professor do you prefer?

My early impressions were formed by seeing the distinguished, imposing Harvard law professor John Houseman dress down Timothy Bottoms in James Bridges' The Paper Chase: "Here is a dime. Take it, call your mother, and tell her there is serious doubt about you ever becoming a lawyer." My impressions changed dramatically when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones may have been more of a thrill-seeker than an academic, but he was driven by his love for archeology -- and a desire to share his knowledge with his students, no matter how distracted they were by his dreamy looks.

Movies have produced so many memorable professors that it's hard to narrow down the list, but here are my other favorites, and why:

Captain America (July 22nd 2011)

Monday, May 25, 2009 5:56 AM | From Celluloid & Cigarette Burns

After being deemed unfit for military service during WWII, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. Joe Johnston will direct, he recently helmed the remake of The Wolf Man. Johnston has also worked on Stars Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi, Battlestar Galactica (Original TV Show) and Indiana Jones: Raiders of The Lost Ark & Temple of Doom.

CASTING RUMORS:

Many actors have been rumored for the role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. They include Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, Neal Mcdonough, Aaron Eckhart, and Mark Valley. Also with the awful choices of Matthew Mconaughey and wrestler John Cena. DiCaprio would be my choice since he's the youngest of the group. He's also proven himself a great dramatic/action actor giving great performances in films such as Gangs of New York, Departed, Blood Diamond and Body of Lies.

CASTING THOUGHTS:

Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) as Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull

Mads Mikkelsen (Clash of The Titans) as Baron Helmut Zemo

Ben Barnes (Narnia:Prince Caspian) as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Solider

Hannah Herzsprung (Reader, Baader Meinof Complex) as Sinthia Schmidt, daughter of Red Skull
