Patrick Harris, Hathaway and Santoro in talks to join Rio
Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:48 AM | From MovieJungle
Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris and Rodrigo Santoro are talks to lend their voices to "Rio," the next collaboration between Fox Animation, Blue Sky Studios and helmer Carlos Saldanha, all of whom worked together in the gargantuan success of $882 million global earned by "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs."
"Rio" follows the adventures of a nerdy macaw who flies out from his small-town Minnesota cage for the exotic Summer Olympic city of Rio de Janeiro. FIlming is apparently set to start on April 8th, 2011 and will be shot in 3D digital animation.
Chris Jenkins ("Surf's Up") and Bruce Anderson ("Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!") are producing.
Hathaway and Harris have done animation before. Hathaway voiced the lead role of Red in the Weinstein Co. release "Hoodwinked!" in 2005, and Harris voiced a character in "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" from Sony Pictures.
Fox has not confirmed casting
Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris and Rodrigo Santoro Are Voicing Blue Sky Studios RIO
While Blue Sky Studios has produced some great looking movies (the “Ice Age” films and “Horton Hears A Who”), only “Horton” impressed me with both its animation and story. However, since it was based on a Dr. Seuss book, that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Anyway, Blue Sky Studios, Fox Animation and director Carlos Saldanha have announced [...]
Trap Teases a Trilogy
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 11:21 PM | From Dread Central
Filmmaker Jason Horton dropped us a line with some news on his latest project, Trap, about a brutal kidnapping that goes from bad to worse when a middle-aged kidnapper falls in love with his 15-year-old victim.
Horton is in final negotiations on a foreign distribution deal for the film and said he's closing in on the domestic side as well. He relayed, "Our financier is actually interested in making Trap the middle section of a trilogy. Although the other movies won't exactly be traditional sequels or prequels, but will be new stories featuring minor characters from Trap."
The film stars Alonzo F. Jones along with Alan Perada and Ashton Blanchard. Below is a new still, and if you click the pic below that, you'll be able to see a teaser scene Horton has uploaded to IMDB.
Horton also mentioned that there's been some talk about a bigger budget follow-up to his apocalyptic anthology Edges of Darkness (review here) thanks to its stellar DVD sales and critical response. Keep it here for more on that front, as well as updates on Trap, as it comes.

He Speaks For The Trees!
Thursday, July 30, 2009 9:56 AM | From Latino Review
The urge to straight-out start quoting Dr. Seuss' The Lorax is over-whelming, but I'll try to remember this is more about movies and less about the potential of Dr. Seuss movies, potential that has recently been squandered. Who knew that the era of CGI that Theodor Seuss Geisel never lived to see would be unable to accurately reproduce the wonder of some of Seuss' earlier animated adaptations?Jim Carrey as the The Grinch in Ron Howard's How The Grinch Stole Christmas suffered from some Carrey showboating, and Horton Hears A Who was a little removed from it's Seussian roots and supplemented with family-friendly fare from comedians like Steve Carrell. And we will not mention Mike Myers' Cat In The Hat except to say that Grinch and Horton were passable and didn't make me retroactively dislike Seuss' characters.News today is that The Lorax is next on the adaptation train, but as a CGI feature rendered for 3D by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment. The Lorax, for those who are unfamiliar, is a "green" story told by an entrepreneur narrator as he cuts down a forest of Truffula trees to make textiles, receiving warnings from The Lorax, a being who speaks for the trees (because they can't speak for themselves). How this is going to be drawn-out to 80 minutes, we have yet to discover. That's mostly going to be the job of Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, the duo that also wrote 2008's Horton Hears a Who and the upcoming Despicable Me starring Steve Carrel. Paul & Daurio will also co-direct The Lorax with Chris Renaud, who co-directed Despicable Me with Pierre Coffin. The Lorax will be the first in a four-picture writing/directing deal Paul & Daurio have signed with Illumination. The Lorax is aiming for a March 2, 2012 release, Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday.Source: Trades
Dr. Seuss Book The Lorax to Become a 3D Animated Movie
Just in case that Horton Hears a Who! movie wasn't enough, Universal has teamed up with Illumination Entertainment to adapt another Dr. Seuss book, this time The Lorax, into a 3D CGI animated feature (just like Horton). First published back in 1971, The Lorax is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, strips a forest of its stock of Truffula trees to manufacture clothing. The results are catastrophic as all the animals leave and nothing's left. Universal's feature version of this will be co-directed by three different directors: Chris Renaud (Despicable Me), Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.
"Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) was prescient in an uncanny way when he wrote the book and explored themes of greed and how that can lead to the destruction of environment," Illumination's Chris Meledandri told Variety. Meledandri was the same person who developed Horton Hears a Who! at Fox ...
Universal Studios and Illimunation Entertainment are continuing with the Dr. Seuss feature film adaptations. ‘The Lorax’ will be a 3D animated film much in the vein of last year’s ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ Chris Renaud, story artist for ‘Horton,’ along with ‘Horton’ screenwriters Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio will be serving as co-directors on the film. Paul and Daurio will also be serving as screenwriters on the film.
‘The Lorax’ tells the “green” story of an entrepreneur who strips a forest full of its trees despite warnings from a small creature known as the Lorax. The film is tentatively scheduled for…
Universal Goes Green With An Adaptation Of The Lorax
The latest Dr. Suess tale to go before cameras (or, in this case, rendering software) will be The Lorax, as Variety reports that Universal has started work on a 3D animated feature based on the book. Chris Meledandri is heading up the project for the Universal family film division Illumination Entertainment. Meledandri was the guy who got the last Suess movie adaptation, Horton Hears a Who!, to work while at Fox. That movie was better than anyone had reason to expect it might be, so perhaps the same alchemy will work on The Lorax.
Dr. Suess first published The Lorax in 1971. The book features a story within a story, where a man called the Once-ler tells a boy how he was mesmerized by giant forests of tufted Triffula trees, and how he chopped one down to create an object that everyone needs. The Lorax emerges from the stump of the ...
I still have yet to see last year's CG adaptation of the Dr. Seuss story Horton Hears a Who!, but the reviews were surprisingly solid (78% on Rotten Tomatoes [1]) and it ended up being the 10th highest grossing movie of the year. It's no surprise then that another Dr. Seuss book is about to get the CG treatment... in 3-D of course! Variety [2] reports that Horton Hears a Who! writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio are now in the process of bringing The Lorax to the big screen.
While Horton was set up at Fox and produced by Blue Sky Studios, The Lorax has landed a deal with Universal and Illumination Entertainment (the same folks behind Despicable Me [3] and Ricky Gervais' Flanimals [4]). Despicable Me director Chris Renaud will be co-directing the film with first-time helmers Paul and Daurio. The story is an environmental fable about a greedy creature known as a Once-ler who is chopping down Truffula Trees and meets some resistance from The Lorax. The movie is scheduled for release on March 2, 2012, which also happens to be the birthday of the late Dr. Seuss! Check out some clips below from the 1972 animated version of the story.
