Big Surprise: Top Grossing Movies of the Decade Are Basically All Franchise Films

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 4:40 AM | From Film Junk
Here's another list for you to digest as we approach the end of the decade. Jason Kottke [1] recently took a look at the list of highest-grossing films from 2000-2009 courtesy of Wikipedia [2], and makes the observation that only one movie in the top 20 is based on an original screenplay. The rest of the movies are all adaptations of books or sequels to existing franchises. Now, it's pretty easy to jump on this list and whine and moan about how it means there is nothing original in Hollywood anymore. While I agree that there is a problem with studios valuing brand over concept, don't forget, we are talking about the movies that made the most money here. OF COURSE familiar characters and titles are going to attract more viewers than strange and unfamiliar ones... doesn't that make sense? A lot of people don't even see movies at the theatre, so they don't discover something until it hits TV or DVD. The first installment is the one that introduces the concept, attracts a following and then builds the franchise. Even the first movie from an existing property needs to build an audience -- notice that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Spider-Man are the only movies on this list that are the first in their series? Anyway, I'm not saying it's good, but it's certainly not surprising. Unfortunately it's this trend that has also resulted in the whole toy and board game movie debacle. Maybe we need a few brand-based movies to fail so that people realize that good stories are also important. Check out the top 20 grossing movies of the decade after the jump. What do you think, is it depressing or deserving? 1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3. The Dark Knight 4. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 7. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 8. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 9. Shrek 2 10. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 11. Spider-Man 3 12. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 13. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 14. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 15. Finding Nemo 16. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 17. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 18. Spider-Man 19. Shrek the Third 20. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban [1] http://kottke.org/09/11/the-2000s-according-to-wikipedia [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s_in_film

NEW YORK, NY (November 1, 2009)- Sony Pictures Classics announces its acquisition of United States’ rights to Rodrigo García’s MOTHER AND CHILD from WME Global. The film debuted at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a Gala Presentation, where it was actively pursued by several US distributors.

MOTHER AND CHILD is the moving tale about the choices we make, the chances we miss, the opportunities we seize and the power of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.

The film was written and directed by Rodrigo García (THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER and NINE LIVES) and produced by Lisa Maria Falcone through her Everest Entertainment and Julie Lynn via her Mockingbird Pictures. The films’ director of photography is Xavier Grobet (CITY OF EMBER, THE WOODSMAN, NACHO LIBRE,) Steven Weisberg edited (HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, PERMANENT MIDNIGHT), with music by Ed Shearmur (WINGS OF THE DOVE, FACTORY GIRL). The award-winning cast includes Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Samuel L. Jackson, Jimmy Smits, and Kerry Washington. The Executive Producer is Alejandro González Iñárritu (BABEL)

“We have known Rodrigo García for a long time, first as the cinematographer of MI VIDA LOCA in the early ‘90s, then as a writer and director, and have always been impressed with his incredible skill at creating roles for actors, especially for women. With MOTHER AND CHILD Rodrigo has managed to define characters which allow for career best performances for all of the actors he has cast in a film that we feel will connect with people all over the U.S. We are excited to be working with him, his remarkable cast and his producers Julie Lynn and Lisa Maria Falcone,” said Sony Pictures Classics.

I’ve been wanting to work with Tom and Michael for a long time. SPC is one of the great brands in independent filmmaking. It’s so fortunate that we can be part of that family,” said director Rodrigo García

"This was a very personal story, which spoke to me on an emotional level as both a producer and a mother." said Lisa Maria Falcone. “We are proud to be involved with such a talented team and its’ unique combination of powerful writing and exceptional cast performances. We are also excited to be donating some of our proceeds to wonderful charities supporting women and children."

“Tom and Michael love films and filmmakers. We are so honored to partner with them and take advantage of their incredible expertise,” added Julie Lynn.

The deal re-partners SPC with producer Julie Lynn, with whom SPC worked on THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB. It also reconnects SPC with Annette Bening, who was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award® for her role in SPC's 2004 BEING JULIA.

Alfonso Cuaron to Direct The Tourist Starring Johnny Depp

Friday, November 6, 2009 4:04 PM | From Film Junk
Although Y tu mamá también was Alfonso Cuaron's breakout film in terms of proving his talent and putting him on Hollywood's radar, it was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men that made him an instant favourite among fantasy and sci-fi fans. Of course, Children of Men was released back in 2006, and Cuaron hasn't really done much since then outside of producing. Now this week it looks like his next directorial gig may finally be falling into place, picking up the pieces of a potentially high-profile project that has gone through multiple changes to cast and crew. If all goes according to plan Cuaron will direct The Tourist, a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer, about an American vacationer in France who is unwittingly used as a decoy for a French spy. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) had previously been attached, as well as Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day). Cuaron would be inheriting a cast that includes Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who were recently brought on to replace Sam Worthington and Charlize Theron. (Tom Cruise was supposed to star at one point as well.) All in all, it sounds like they are potentially trading up here, no? Check out a trailer for the original film after the jump.

Harry Potter Through Fresh Eyes: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 7:35 AM | From /Film
[This article is part 2 of a 4-part series. You can also read part 1.] Another year, another Harry Potter film directed by Chris Columbus. My hopes were a bit higher going into this one. With one massively successful Potter film under his belt, would Columbus better refine his craft to deliver us a more compelling sequel? Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) This time around, our adventurers find themselves entangled with the mystery of the chamber of secrets, a hidden area of the school housing a secret that threatens to destroy all the mudbloods (those who arent descended purely from wizards) at Hogwarts. When compared with the Sorcerers Stone, this film feels a lot less like its trying to say Wow, look around at how cool everything is! The world has already been established, and Columbus leans a little bit more on his existing creation, leaving room for a little ... Read Article

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - What Did You Think?

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 11:21 PM | From /Film
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters on Wednesday. I got a chance to see the film last night and I think its the best film since Alfanso Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban, which is my favorite of the series. I absolutely loved the cinematography, specially some of the connected/stiched one-shots. The character moments were just so much fun.  I was really surprised that the movie was so much fun, especially considering how dark the marketing has been. Yates brought some of the magic and wonder back that was missing from the last couple films. There isn't a lot of action sequences but you don't really notice and it doesn't really matter. This book, and the resulting film is more about the developing relationships and the backstory of Voldermort.  I'm surprised they got away with a PG rating considering some of the violence (blood especially). Discuss: What did you think of ... Read Article

Harry Potter 1-5: By The Numbers

Thursday, July 9, 2009 6:35 AM | From /Film
What is your favorite Harry Potter film? Which of the movies in the series do you think is the best reviewed? Highest rated by the mainstream public? Largest grossing. I can tell you that my favorite is Alfanso Cuaron's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and it seems like I'm not alone. Azkaban is the best reviewed and highest publicly rated of the bunch, yet it made the least amount of money of the series ($83 million less than the next lowest release). How sad. Lets take a look at the Harry Potter film series (so far) by the numbers. The graph below shows the series in Worldwide Box Office Earnings: Sorcerers Stone -- $976,457,891 Chamber of Secrets -- $878,987,880 Prisoner of Azkaban -- $795,538,952 Goblet of Fire -- $896,013,036 Order of the Phoenix -- $938,468,864 In the graph below we ... Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Rated PG

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 12:49 AM | From CanMag.Com
When you have a franchise like Harry Potter, with five films having already hit theaters, I guess the MPAA rating ceases to matter anymore. So when the MPAA stamps Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with PG, something that hasn't happened since Prisoner of Azkaban, I guess we should just let it go. Besides, have you seen all the positive feedback the film has been receiving so far?

Rated PG: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
The MPAA has rated Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince PG for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality. While PG would suggest material for your average child, let us not forget how scary the visuals were in Chamber of Secrets. I mean, that snake was damn scary! Read Article
