Big Surprise: Top Grossing Movies of the Decade Are Basically All Franchise Films

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 4:40 AM | From Film Junk
Here's another list for you to digest as we approach the end of the decade. Jason Kottke [1] recently took a look at the list of highest-grossing films from 2000-2009 courtesy of Wikipedia [2], and makes the observation that only one movie in the top 20 is based on an original screenplay. The rest of the movies are all adaptations of books or sequels to existing franchises. Now, it's pretty easy to jump on this list and whine and moan about how it means there is nothing original in Hollywood anymore. While I agree that there is a problem with studios valuing brand over concept, don't forget, we are talking about the movies that made the most money here. OF COURSE familiar characters and titles are going to attract more viewers than strange and unfamiliar ones... doesn't that make sense? A lot of people don't even see movies at the theatre, so they don't discover something until it hits TV or DVD. The first installment is the one that introduces the concept, attracts a following and then builds the franchise. Even the first movie from an existing property needs to build an audience -- notice that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Spider-Man are the only movies on this list that are the first in their series? Anyway, I'm not saying it's good, but it's certainly not surprising. Unfortunately it's this trend that has also resulted in the whole toy and board game movie debacle. Maybe we need a few brand-based movies to fail so that people realize that good stories are also important. Check out the top 20 grossing movies of the decade after the jump. What do you think, is it depressing or deserving? 1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3. The Dark Knight 4. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 7. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 8. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 9. Shrek 2 10. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 11. Spider-Man 3 12. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 13. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 14. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 15. Finding Nemo 16. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 17. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 18. Spider-Man 19. Shrek the Third 20. Finally! A Robert Pattinson Documentary!

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 9:21 AM | From Cinematical
When I first saw Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I thought "Well, he's cute." I never thought about him again. (When it comes to Potter crushes, mine will always be the dude with the long blonde mane.) Who could imagine that his would be the face that would launch a thousand shrieks? Still, Pattinson's story isn't that unusual and girls have screamed and cried over plenty of handsome lads, and will probably do so until the end of time. But is it really worth filming a documentary about?

Someone thought so. According to Screen Daily, UK distributor Revolver has snapped up Robsessed, a feature length documentary that studies the "the teenage phenomenon known as being Rob-sessed" (also known as puberty). It'll follow Pattinson's career from a relative nobody to being Edward Cullen and a man who gets hit by a cab while running from fans. Hopefully it will take some time and examine all his likes, dislikes, solve what's going on with his hair, or reveal just what he was doing at my downtown Denver fish-and-chips place. (I'm not kidding. There's a signed photo of him at the restaurant that thanks them personally for "the best fish and chips!")

The documentary will be released in the US and the UK in November to coincide with the release of New Moon. They're also planning to release a boxed set that includes Pattinson's little seen (we wonder why) 2006 film Haunted Airmen. So much Pattinson in one month might just inspire someone to film Robsessed 2: The Reckoning.

Legion Trailer Starring Paul Bettany

Thursday, August 13, 2009 8:21 AM | From Film Junk
Here's a trailer that's got a lot of people talking about a movie that I didn't know anything about up until now. Legion is an action flick about a biblical apocalypse where God sends his angels to destroy humanity. He "got tired of all the bullshit", apparently. The only person who stands in his way is the archangel Michael, played by Paul Bettany, who must protect the unborn child of a waitress who is the second coming of Christ. Oh, and here's the other thing: the angels all fight with machine guns and rocket launchers! I have to admit, there are parts of this trailer that seemed way too cheesy to me, but the special effects are quite good. This is understandable considering that first-time director Scott Stewart comes from a visual effects background (he has worked on such movies as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Superman Returns, Grindhouse and Iron Man). The trailer is also a little too long at just over 5 minutes, but it is a red band trailer so it doesn't hold anything back. The supporting cast includes Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, Adrianne Palicki and Tyrese Gibson. Legion hits theatres on January 22nd, 2010. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Dorian Gray Trailer Starring Ben Barnes

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 2:14 PM | From Film Junk
The tale of Dorian Gray is one that has been told many times over the years and in many different variations. The character comes from a Victorian Era novel written by Oscar Wilde called The Picture of Dorian Gray, about a handsome young man who sells his soul so that he may never lose his good looks. He indulges in sex, drugs and murder but with each act, a painting of him changes to reflect a disfigurement of some sort, revealing his hidden secret. There is new take on the story directed by Oliver Parker (The Importance of Being Earnest, St. Trinian's, Othello), that stars Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes, along with Colin Firth and Rachel Hurd-Wood. An international trailer has arrived online and while the music is a bit over the top, the Victorian Era setting and lush cinematography by Roger Pratt (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Twelve Monkeys) are intriguing to say the least. It hits theatres on September 9th in the U.K., no word on a North American release as of yet. Check out the trailer after the jump.
