Box Office: New Moon Fails to Surpass The Dark Knights Opening Weekend
While it did break midnight and opening day records, The Twilight Saga: New Moon was unable to beat The Dark Knight's huge opening weekend record, despite being the highest opening weekend of 2009.
The Summit Entertainment sequel took in an estimated $140.7 million domestically over the three day weekend, about $18 million shy of Batman's record $158 million, and even shy of Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million. New Moon will probably beat the life-time domestic theatrical gross of Twilight by the end of the week.
New Moon's worldwide total is $258.8 million, the seventh highest worldwide opening of all time, behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Wins Big
Monday, November 23, 2009 12:40 AM | From CanMag.Com
While I subconsciously wanted The Twilight Saga: New Moon to flop just as a lesson to Summit Entertainment for rushing a production of a popular franchise, there is no stopping screaming girls. I mean, Summit could have taken a dump, wrapped it in tinfoil, and put that in theaters with the label "New Moon" and tickets still would have sold. That being said, the Twilight sequel opened to the third best weekend of all time.
Box Office Report: The Twilight Saga: New Moon
Female-fueled ticket sales helped New Moon bring in a whopping $140.7 million during its opening bow. As an added bonus, the film opened to $118.1 million overseas. Do the math and you'll discover that New Moon saw an opening total of $258.8 million. The sequel easily bested Twilight's debut of $69.6 million a year back. Summit knew they had a good thing early on, especially considering that the film earned an impressive $26.3 million during the midnight runs, easily beating out the previous midnight record holder, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which grossed $22.2 million. With the help of midnight runs, the ticket sales for Friday amounted to $72.7 million, also besting the previous Friday record held by The Dark Knight at $67.2 million.
Weekend Box Office - NEW MOON Has The Third Highest Weekend of All Time with $140.7 Million
Sunday, November 22, 2009 11:16 AM | From Collider
It was a record-breaking weekend at the box office from almost every perspective. In fact, so many records were broken that it is kind of hard to keep them straight. By Friday morning The Twilight Saga: New Moon had already passed The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to become the top [...]
NEW MOON Achieves Best Opening Day EVER!
Sunday, November 22, 2009 1:56 AM | From GeekTyrant
This is insane I tell you! Yesterday we reported that The Twilight Saga: New Moon broke the record the record for midnight box office sales which was previously held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Today I am shocked to report that it has achieved the best movie opening day of all time with [...]
Well, with sold out midnight shows everywhere, Fandango has released its numbers. The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in an easy $26million in its midnight shows alone! That beats Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's gross of $22million. Now it holds that record, can it beat The Dark Knight's $67million opening day gross? Could it defeat Knight's $158million opening weekend?
In my opinion, first maybe. At the same time Knight had the advantage of being in the summer and unless parents are letting their kids skip school to see it... Opening weekend? not by a long shot. The series will hit big opening weekend but lacking broad appeal it won't go much beyond the demographic. People who are angry over New Moon holding the midnight show record, just take comfort in that the legions of Harry Potter fans turning out for Deathly Hallows Part 2 (yes the seventh book is being released in two parts) at midnight will permanently wrest that record from sparkling vampires. And I think, pretty much any other movie.
But anyway, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is in theaters now and holds a 65% on the site. The next in the series; The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (directed by David Slade of Hard Candy & 30 Days of Night) is due out June 30, 2010.
NEW MOON Dethrones HARRY POTTER and DARK KNIGHT for Midnight Box-Office Take
Friday, November 20, 2009 4:36 PM | From GeekTyrant
It happened, the Twilight fanatics came out in full force on opening night. Summit Entertainment has announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has broken box office records, earning over $26.27 million in midnight screenings from 3,514 theaters.
The previous records were held by Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince with $22.2 million, and Christopher [...]
The Twilight Saga: New Moon Destroys Harry Potter and Dark Knight at Midnight Box Office
Summit Entertainment has announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has broken box office records, earning over $26.27 million in midnight screenings from 3,514 theaters. This destroys the $22.2 million midnight record held by Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, and the previous second place, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, which earned $18.4 million in midnight earnings. Also, Summit's re-release of the original Twilight on Thursday night on 2,057 screens resulted in $1.3 million in ticket sales.
But the real question is, what will New Moon's numbers look like at the end of the weekend?
Here is a round up of predictions from the Box Office prognosticators around the web:
Box Office Psychics: $114M
Lees Movie Info: $111M
Box Office.com: $110M
Box Office Mojo (Derby): $98.4M
Twilight Saga: New Moon Sets Midnight Opening Box Office Record
Friday, November 20, 2009 2:40 PM | From Dread Central
It's finally here -- the opening weekend of The Twilight Saga: New Moon (review here), and it's already shattering box office records. Reports are that New Moon set a new high for opening midnight show grosses with an estimated $26.27 million playing at 3,514 theaters for a per theater average of $7,476.
The numbers are courtesy of Fandango, which sold nearly 30% of Thursday nights estimated domestic box office for the film and also said that New Moon ticket sales show no signs of tapering off this weekend, as the latest Twilight movie is trending to sell more than 10 tickets per second throughout the course of the day.
New Moon's midnight receipts topped previous record holder Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by in excess of $4 million. "This massive fan response portends an opening weekend that could be one of the biggest of the year and reflects the fervor and excitement surrounding this follow-up to last year's 'Twilight'," Paul Dergarabedian, head of Hollywood.com's box office tracking division, said in a statement published by Reuters. Expectations are for the film to take in around $100 million when all is said and done this weekend, including the midnight grosses.
As we did back when Twilight was released, we'll have Morgan's counterpoint to Nomad's review of the film later in the day so be sure to check back.
In the meantime, if you're not a fan of the Saga but are being dragged to the theatre by a friend or loved one who is, click here for a pretty amusing list of Things To Do in the Theatre While Your Girl is Watching Twilight: New Moon. Following are a couple of my personal favorites:
Bring a flask and every time someone has their shirt off on screen, whisper "neeeples" and take a drink.
Press in on your closed eyes and watch the light show.
Bring scissors and construction paper and make paper vampires.
Create new Chuck Norris statements. Example: If Chuck Norris were in Twilight, he would punch you in the face.
