Catherine Hardwicke's and Emile Hirsch's names have been linked to another pretty famous "H" -- Hamlet -- and if the statements the director and actor have been making all over the Net recently are true, then we can expect another "H" to be joining them -- Horror!
The duo, who previously worked together on Lords of Dogtown, are collaborating on the project. Hirch told Collider, "Where its not a horror-slasher movie, its like a suspense-horror. Its almost like mixing 'Hamlet' with 'The Shining' a little bit and making this kind of scary/cool vision of the play."
And Hardwicke promised MTV that "It's a modern-day film, set at a liberal-arts college where words matter so people are careful and talk in beautiful language, and Hamlet tries to express himself through music." She goes on to say her reinterpretation will continue the filmmaker's love affair with music by combining the spirit of legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain with the Bard. "So, we're using some of the cooler Shakespeare language, in a musical way. [My Hamlet] is like an [aspiring] rock star. He's got six people that go to his performances, go to clubs, and listen to him. It's like an early Kurt Cobain."
Most of the score will be comprised of original tunes, written for the film by Brian Reitzell, a veteran of the punk and indie-rock scene, and Hirsch is studying up to do his own singing and guitar playing. The plan is to begin shooting this fall, possibly in Boston.

In an interview promoting his latest role in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, Emile Hirsch opened up to Collider about another one of his projects.

Hirsch, who helped conceive the idea for this modern-day re-telling, described [...]
Emile Hirsch on What to Expect in His New Hamlet Movie
Last week we ran an update on the upcoming slate for director Catherine Hardwicke. One of the projects she has in the works, which may be shooting soon, is a contemporary version of Shakespeare's Hamlet that is set to star Emile Hirsch (first written about here). Our friends at Collider talked with Hirsch recently, who not only confirmed that he's supposed to start shooting in October, but divulged some interesting details on what we can expect. "It's almost like mixing Hamlet with The Shining a little bit and making this kind of scary/cool vision of the play." Well damn, I already prefer this version over that Shakespeare 4 Kidz crap.
"I'm working on a modern-day younger adaptation of Hamlet, in verse, molded to be almost like this supernatural horror movie. Where it's not a horror-slasher movie, it's like a suspense-horror... All the cast will be much younger and it's geared towards ...
Elsinore Films is producing a 3-D musical "Hamlet" targeting the "Harry Potter" and "High School Musical" market. The movie will be the first of six adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays, based on musical versions created by UK theater company Shakespeare 4 Kidz.
Hamlet to Be the First of Six 3D Shakespeare Adaptations
And if that headline doesn't have you excited, then you just wait. The laughably named UK theatre company Shakespeare 4 Kidz (which I can only assume is in cahoots with Kidz Bop over here in the States) is moving forward with a six-picture deal to market Shakespeare to (what they say is) the Harry Potter and High School Musical market, according to Variety. I'd say the latter market is correct, but I'd replace Harry Potter with the Twilight crowd. But that's just me. Hamlet: The 3-D Musical is up first to be followed by Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and The Tempest. Still on board?
You're still reading? I'll bet I could write just about anything right now. Good thing this story's comedy just writes itself. The producers of this monstrosity - I mean, this ridiculous attempt to culture kids - I mean, this series of ...

Are you tired of 3-D movies only alternating between cartoon animals and violent killers? How about something a little more, sophisticated? Well, you’re in luck, because Elsinore Films’ Mark Thomas is producing a 3-D musical version of HAMLET that is supposed to be aimed at the HARRY POTTER and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL audiences.
Thomas is actually adapting six Shakespeare plays to 3-D film, and the...
