This week Roland Emmerich’s new film 2012 opened up in theaters. I saw this film and laughed my ass off because of how ridiculous the movie was. You can read my review for it Here.
I thought it would be appropriate to do a list of five other disaster films that I found absolutely ridiculous and [...]
Cinematical Seven: Silliest Disaster Scenarios
Thursday, November 12, 2009 10:16 PM | From Cinematical
We both know that I could probably fill all seven slots of this list with just scenes from Roland Emmerich's disaster-tastic 2012, but in the interests of letting everyone else get a chance to see it, let's stick with films that have already come and gone. Some of these titles qualify because of the uniquely ridiculous nature of their disasters, while others count for what ridiculous plots unfold amidst otherwise ordinarily perilous acts of nature.
There will be a couple of spoilers to go along with our picks, but since most of these have been out for a couple of years, it's not like it's the end of the world...
Day 2 of WAMGs series on 2012 will take a look at some of the clips from the film as well as a few other disaster films. The money shots like the one up above are what gets our butts into the seats. It really is a guilty pleasure… disaster pornography, if you will. We return time and time again for the thrill of the ride to see how the filmmaker will kill off the species, whether it be through invading aliens, massive tidal waves, shattering earthquakes or engulfing tornadoes, and Emmerich has become ”King-of-All-He-Surveys” over it.
He loves taking out our national landmarks too. I think…
Beginning today, WAMG begins a four-part series on Columbia Pictures upcoming film 2012. Day 1 takes a look at the trailer from the film as well as other trailers from the genre. I must start off by saying I love “time for the bad news” disaster films. Small scaleglobal scale, complete with the thinly veiled attempt at character development and not much of a script. Pretty much a big ball of cheese with no crackers. Schlock disaster films are the best. There I said it.
When I worked in TV News, for me it was always about the visuals. What the viewer would see, not…
Roland Emmerich May or May Not Blow Up the World Again
Friday, November 6, 2009 4:24 PM | From Cinematical
At a press junket earlier this summer for 2012, Roland Emmerich told reporters he's not doing any more blow-'em-up flicks. "I would not know how to top this... It's just one of these things, you know. I had a hard time deciding to do another disaster movie, but... you cannot make a disaster movie if there's not something --- an idea in this disaster which elevates it to something more than a disaster. And so it was this idea, you know, that there will be a global flood and it's a retelling of Noah's Arc."
Later he added, "It's not my last film, it's my last disaster film. And that's because I wouldn't know what else to do. It's just, you know what, I really didn't want to do this movie at first... But when I decided that the idea was too good to not do it for the reason I had done before, I said, okay, if I do it, I will do it in such a spectacular manner that nobody can top it for a long time. I have that pride in my work."
Roland Emmerich's next disaster film 2012 won't hit theaters for a couple weeks (November 13th), but a sequel has already been planned... but not the normal kind of sequel. Entertainment Weekly has learned that Emmerich and executive producer Howard Gordon (Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice) are also developing a television drama titled 2013, which would be about what happens after the disaster. Gordon has already entered talks with ABC to develop the series, and if it does happen, don't expect a lot of action to take place on the small screen, as this would be a drama set in a post apocalyptic setting.
Spoiler warning: Apparently some people on earth survive the epic disaster of 2012, and the series would be about "a group of people who survived .... on a piece of land that was spared or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There ...
2012 AU Review
Tuesday, November 3, 2009 1:06 AM | From IGN Movies
We haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The latest global disaster movie from director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) throws so much stupidity at you in such rapid succession that it's practically a torrential cliché-maelstrom; the kind of bloated, silly cinematic disaster that is so unintentionally hilarious that actually flips over and becomes a redeeming factor.
Uwe Bolls Disaster Movie The Final Storm Gets A Movie Trailer
Yes, we were one of the movie news sites that filed a report at Fantastic Fest declaring that Uwe Boll might have finally made a good movie. Was it just a fluke? Was it just a case of the broken clock being right every once in a while (twice a day)? Or might Boll go on to make some other fun films?
His next movie is an entry into the disaster genre, with a film called Storm about the biblical end of the world. Of course, Boll had no part in writing this film, as the screenwriting credits point to Canadian scribe Tim McGregor. It doesn't look great, and yes, it still screams "I'm a direct-to-dvd feature film" but the acting and dialogue seem to be well above the normal bar we're use in a Boll production (which to be fair, was set very low).
Here is the official plot synopsis:
"Biblical rain, dying ...
Lars Von Triers Next Project is Sci-Fi Disaster Movie Melancholia
With Lars Von Trier's controversial film Antichrist finally getting a small U.S. theatrical release this past weekend, allowing even more moviegoers to enjoy the finer points of genital mutilation, a lot of people are wondering what the man can possibly do for an encore. With this movie bringing him so much attention, would the Danish director retreat to his art house roots, or would he go for something even more provocative? To be honest, I don't think anyone can answer that question as of yet, but either way, it seems like his next project is going to be something pretty unexpected.
Earlier this month, Variety [1] unveiled details of Von Trier's next film, a curious picture loosely titled Melancholia. It is being described as a "psychological drama-cum-disaster movie"... yes, that's right, a Lars Von Trier disaster movie. I'm not completely familiar with Von Trier's full filmography, so I'm not sure if he's attempted anything like this before, but it sounds like a pretty odd choice. The plot is being kept under wraps, but apparently has something to do with a planet called Melancholia, which comes "threateningly close to Earth", but it will not have anything to do with an alien invasion.
I can't help picturing Deep Impact or The Day After Tomorrow, but that certainly does not seem like Von Trier's style. Producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen says the project "will use some special effects, but nothing compared to Hollywood", while Von Trier himself said simply, "No more happy endings!" What do you think, does this sound cool? Is Lars Von Trier selling out, or is he simply having fun experimenting with genre filmmaking?
