"Horsemen" review. Se7en-styled thriller is a winner.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:48 AM | From MovieJungle

Jonas Åkerlund-directed "Horsemen" surprised me with intense storytelling. The Swedish helmer known more for his music video contributions than anything else, engages viewers with strong direction. The film brings out one of Dennis Quaid's best performances to date and showcases the oftentimes softly displayed Ziyi Zhang's talents for quickly changing character and succeeding in multiple genres.

Additionally, the moral of the story is a strong one and makes the film easy to reminisce, something few films achieve these days in an arena swamped with big budget blockbusters like "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." This costs a mere pinpoint in budget comparison and is far more a showcasing of a buffet of talented performers.

Quaid stars as Aidan Breslin, a recently widowed hard-working detective specializing in forensic odontology (see below for a definition) who's left to father two sons - Alex (Pucci) and Sean (Liam James), oftentimes neglecting them due to both his workload and workaholic manor.

The most brutal case comes in which includes a woman who has been murdered in a flesh hook suspension device among others. Zhang comes in as the adopted eldest daughter of the woman who's not all she seems and Breslin soon realizes that there is more than one killer and the biblical four horsemen of the apocalypse come into play.

Who are all of the horsemen, what part do they each play, who are the victims and what is the final moral of the story?

Film easily keeps you guessing and never loosens its tense grip.

I was additionally impressed by "Thumbsucker" Lou Taylor Pucci's performance. In general, the film includes a strong cast who seem to have given their all in this small indie gem.

DVD Features include:

As defined by Wikipedia - Forensic odontology or forensic dentistry is the proper handling, examination and evaluation of dental evidence. Read more on the subject here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forensic_odontology

The box office weekend ahead Surrogates looks to top the chart.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:48 AM | From MovieJungle

The box office weekend ahead promises a buffet of films looking to satisfy the science fiction, horror and musical fans.

Bruce Willis starrer “Surrogates” should be the one to back for a top spot, dropping current topper “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” The Touchstone Pictures science fiction thriller helmed by Jonathan Mostow (“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” “U-571”) unspools via Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures into 2,951 locations. Also in the cast are Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe, James Francis Ginty, Michael Cudlitz with James Cromwell and Ving Rhames.
Science fiction horror “Pandorum” should keep fans of the genre on the edge of their seats under the direction of “Antibodies” helmer Christian Alvart. Overture Films distributes the eerie looking film with Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue, Cung Le, Eddie Rouse, André Hennicke and Norman Reedus into 2,400 locations.
MGM’s musical “Fame” debuts in the biggest theatre count of the lot. The –helmed film sees 3,096 locations. The cast, for those unfamiliar with certain names and who plays what are as follows:
Asher Book as Marco, Kristy Flores as Rosie, Paul Iacono as Neil, Paul McGill as Kevin, Naturi Naughton as Denise, Kay Panabaker as Jenny, Kherington Payne as Alice, Collins Pennie as Malik, Walter Perez as Victor, and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle as Joy. Their instructors include Debbie Allen as Principal Simms, Charles S. Dutton as Alvin Dowd, Kelsey Grammer as Joel Cranston, Megan Mullally as Fran Rowan, and Bebe Neuwirth as Lynn Kraft.
Despite the wide openers, “Cloudy” should still post a solid sophomore weekend figure.
Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Whip It” sneaks into 500 theatres on Saturday prior to it’s opening the following weekend. The film marks the feature-length directorial debut of Drew Barrymore and stars Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Alia Shawkat, Eve and Zoe Bell.

Mama Mia! Meatballs still tasty in second weekend as Surrogates and Fame sputter in.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:48 AM | From MovieJungle

Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsSony’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” continued a strong run in its sophomore weekend at the box office with an estimated $24.6 million grossed from 2,951 venues. Film which features the voice talents of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Andy Samberg, Mr. T and Bobb’e J. Thompson showed a mere 18% change in compared to last weekend’s $30.3 million take.

Disappointing in second place with just $15 million was Touchstone Pictures’ “Surrogates” frontlined by Bruce Willis and including Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe and Ving Rhames. Science fiction actioner/thriller is helmed by Jonathan Mostow and adapted for the screen by Michael Ferris and John Brancato based on the novel from Top Shelf Comix' Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. Still, even with Willis in the lead, the film which opened in 2,951 locations averaged just $5,083 per theatre.
MGM’s “Fame” reboot was never destined to do well at the box office and ended in third position with $10 million from 3,096 venues at a low $3,241 per-theatre average.  IMDb users in particular have shown their dislike with a current 4.3/10 average rating and the score looks to plummet further for the Kevin Tancharoen film.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Matt Damon starrer “The Informant!” showed a 33.9% change in its sophomore weekend with $6.9 million earned, bringing the total gross thus far to around $20.9 million.
“Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself” denied Overture Films’ science fiction horror “Pandorum” entry into the top five when posting $4.7 million in its third weekend. Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid starrer earned $4.4 million but the money should not be a reflection of the film’s quality as overall reception has been positive for the Christian Alvart film.
Jennifer's BodyRomance “Love Happens” dropped 46.3% in its second weekend with $4.3 million ahead of the rapidly plummeting “Jennifer’s Body” flopper in seventh with $3.5 million.
Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov-produced “9” from Shane Acker takes its total over $27.1 million with a further $2.8 million added in ninth place.
Ending the top ten films is Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” with $2.7 million pulled in from its sixth weekend. War film starring Brad Pitt, Eli Roth and Diane Kruger has amassed over $114 million from a $70 million budget.

Pandorum review. (5/5). The best science fiction horror since Aliens.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:48 AM | From MovieJungle

Pandorum - (l-r) Cung Le, Ben Foster and Antje TraueTwo of the most impressive films I’ve seen this year fall into the science fiction genre. The first being the South African “District 9” from Neill Blomkamp and now “Pandorum” under the skilled hand of director Christian Alvart.

This was a film I was eager to view since first coming across it and, although I had great expectations, they were easily surpassed. I find that the film is a clever mixture of various potent films in the same genre with elements of 1997’s gory “Event Horizon” by Paul W.S. Anderson, the Barry Levinson film “Sphere” of 1998 and the exceptional 2005 cave horror “The Descent” from Neil Marshall.
Clever usage of the Earth’s population increase is superimposed, up until a time when man has no choice but to reach out into space and find another planet to call their home. Such a planet very similar to Earth visually, that may hold man’s future, is Tanis.
Ben Foster leads as Bower, a technical officer who wakes up on board a gargantuan space ship called The Elysium. Due to the effects of extended hyper sleep, he has no recollection of who he is or of the mission at hand.
Learning his name and kitting himself up, he then finds Lieutenant Payton (Dennis Quaid). Trying to regain their memory, the duo undertakes to find the ship’s core and return it to a stable condition. The door’s jammed leaving Bower battling claustrophobia whilst making his way through a ventilation shaft to the other side.
The adrenalin quickly picks up when he briefly comes across Nadia (Antje Traue) and is left to hide from a pack of human-like creatures on a hunt.
In time we meet other survivors like Manh (Cung Le), a foreigner on board for his agricultural expertise. How do we know? Each member has a tattoo on their forearm which indicates their position on the ship. There's also Gallo (Cam Gigandet), a crewman found by Quaid's character who easily churns out many questions and a crazed and hungry chef played by Eddie Rouse.
Filled with non-stop action, tension, strong performances and wonderful twists, “Pandorum” leads one down the path of physical as well as mental survival and easily goes down as the best science fiction horror since “Aliens.”
Destined to sit proudly within my DVD collection come home entertainment release time.
Unfortunately, whilst at Comic-Con this year, I didn’t have time to speak to Christian Alvart or co-star Antje Traue after Ben Foster and Cung Le due to time limitations.
