New to Theatres This Weekend: Funny People, The Collector, Thirst

Friday, July 31, 2009 10:35 AM | From Film Junk
Judd Apatow's Funny People is the big release this weekend, and one a lot of people have been waiting for, although it's hard to predict just how well it's going to do. Apatow's name plus Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen should equal a box office hit, but they've got a long way to go if they're hoping to catch The Hangover as the biggest comedy of the year. Also in wide release this weekend is the family adventure comedy Aliens in the Attic and the The Collector, a thriller from the writers of Saw IV, V and VI. Lots of great stuff in select theatres too, including the documentaries Not Quite Hollywood and The Cove, plus Chan-wook Park's vampire flick Thirst, unfortunately none of these movies are opening in more than 5 theatres. What will you be checking out this weekend? Funny People [1] Aliens in the Attic [2] The Collector [3] Adam [4] (limited) Thirst [5] (limited) Not Quite Hollywood [6] (limited) Flame & Citron [7] (limited) The Cove [8] (limited) Lorna's Silence [9] (limited) [1] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1201167/ [2] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0775552/ [3] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844479/ [4] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1185836/ [5] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0762073/ [6] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0996966/ [7] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0920458/ [8] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1313104/ [9] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1186369/

Friday, June 26, 2009 8:42 AM | From Film Junk
There's a little movie opening this weekend that you might have heard of called Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and based on some of the early box office numbers, it seems poised to break a few records regardless of the poor critical reception [1]. New To Theatres This Weekend: Land of the Lost, The Hangover, Away We Go

Friday, June 5, 2009 9:21 AM | From Film Junk
Two big comedies will battle it out this weekend at the box office, with Will Ferrell and his family-friendly adventure Land of the Lost having the distinct advantage over the underdog The Hangover. Can word of mouth and strong reviews (81% on Rotten Tomatoes [1]) give it the boost it needs? Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame also returns to the big screen this weekend with romantic comedy My Life in Ruins, while Sam Mendes's new dramedy Away We Go opens on just a handful of screens. Also in select theatres: the Maria Bello thriller Downloading Nancy, and Tennessee starring Mariah Carey! What will you be checking out? Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis team for "High School"

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 6:59 PM | From MovieJungle
Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis have joined Parallel Media's indie comedy "High School," which Parallel Zide is producing.

John Stalberg Jr. is directing from the screenplay he wrote with Stephen Susco ("The Grudge," "The Grudge 2")

Susco also wrote "Red" starring Brian Cox where Cox took the Best Actor at the SITGES awards.

Production will start Nov. 8 in Detroit.

Story focuses on a high school valedictorian who, after getting high with the school stoner, is up for a drug test and hatches a scheme to get the entire school stoned so he can beat the test. Apparently, Chiklis will play the school's principal and Brody will play the drug dealer.

Brody was last in Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited" with Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman.

Jackass Star Goes Somewhere

Tuesday, May 19, 2009 10:00 PM | From The Moving Picture
Jackass star Chris Pontius will get the chance to prove he can do more than just get hit in the nuts, as hes landed a supporting role in Sophia Coppolas next film, Somewhere - a dramedy set at the iconic Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) are starring in the film, which centers on a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont. With an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter, he is forced to reexamine his life. Pontius will play Sammy, best friend of the Dorff character. Coppola, who said she has been looking to make an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles, received permission to shoot at the hotel, which has become notorious in recent years as a popular address for tabloid-friendly celebs. Coppola is producing with brother Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited) and G. Mac Brown (Australia) through American Zoetrope. Father Francis Ford Coppola, Fred Roos and Paul Rassam are executive producing. Somewhere is scheduled to start filming in the summer. Read Article

New To Theatres This Weekend: Angels & Demons, Management, The Brothers Bloom

Thursday, May 14, 2009 1:21 PM | From Film Junk
It's another weekend with only one major new release, but multiplexes are going to start to get crowded now with Ron Howard's Angels & Demons going up against both X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Star Trek. Does Star Trek have any hope of staying #1 for two weeks in a row? Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom is also out this weekend, but only in a few theatres to start... it will expand over the next few weeks. As always, there's a rom-com alternative for the ladies too: Management starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn. Note: I'm going to be away for the long weekend, so I'll leave this post as sort of an open thread to discuss whatever you guys want. Feel free to post any breaking news stories in the comments, or if you see Angels & Demons, share your thoughts below. Wolverine goes head to head with J.J. Abrams's Star Trek this weekend... who will come out victorious? No matter what happens, I think it's safe to say that Star Trek is back in a big way. Next Day Air starring Donald Faison, Mike Epps, and Mos Def. In limited release we have Carlos Cuaron's soccer comedy Rudo Y Cursi, Kirby Dick's documentary Outrage, and the Salvador Dali biopic Little Ashes starring Robert Pattinson.
