Italian Basterds Poster Evokes Old Hollywood

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 9:14 AM | From Cinema Blend
There are two widely accepted facts about movie posters: they looked better in the Old Hollywood era, and for modern ones, the international version is always superior. The Italian poster for Inglourious Basterds, snagged by Bad Taste, proves both of these things simultaneously. The red stripe in the background evokes painted classic posters like Casablanca or The Maltese Falcon, and the three Basterds striding forward look damn near ready to take your head off. I like it, and wonder when ... Read Article

Name a Movie That Will NEVER Be Remade

Friday, May 29, 2009 9:28 AM | From Cinematical

My inbox, Facebook, and Twitter page were semi-flooded with messages of support and condolence when this A L I E N remake gossip hit the wires, and that's because (as anyone in the universe can tell you), it's my #1 favorite film of all time. Mainly because it's just about the perfect horror film, but also because it's a movie that helped plant me on the road of movie freakdom, and for that I'm eternally grateful. Plus it has Sigourney Weaver in her underwear.

So if a film as undeniably flawless as A L I E N can be considered for a remake, it begs the question: What movie won't they remake? Keep in mind that Psycho, Halloween, The Manchurian Candidate, and King Kong have already earned remakes, which tells me that all bets are off. Not even Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, or The Wizard of Oz are safe. Therefore, clearly, remakes are a force of pure evil.

Then again, there IS the old Shakespeare argument, the one that says "Hey, the Bard's plays have been remade over and over for centuries, and surely you wouldn't call Casablanca superior to King Lear, would you?" To which I would respond, "Good point. And no, Casablanca is definitely not superior to King Lear. But A L I E N certainly is."

Blu-ray Review: Pinocchio (Platinum Edition)

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 12:21 AM | From RopeofSilicon
Pinocchio is now the oldest movie I own on Blu-ray with Casablanca being the second oldest by two years. However, watching the film you would never assume it was 69-years-old (for some reason this is called the 70th Anniversary edition though). It is a testament to Disney’s storage and restoration process considering I have films [...] Read Article

HOW TO GET A PROJECT GREENLIT

Friday, February 27, 2009 3:42 PM | From FilmDrunk
A comic book character who looks like an adolescent sex fantasy?  Why this is unheard of! THR today reports that a 3-D project called Aphrodite IX is moving forward, and as you can probably guess, it sounds like your basic Casablanca-esque story of heartbreak and redemption. [Some production companies] have joined forces to adapt the Top Cow [...] Read Article

CASABLANCA Ultimate Collectors Edition DVD Review -- Chris reviews the latest Casablanca DVD and tells you if its worth the upgrade

Thursday, December 18, 2008 1:07 AM | From Collider
The classic Hollywood film Casablanca is a timeless movie masterpiece; one of a handful of great must see films. Sure its sometimes sappy and ultimately sentimental, but its Hollywood filmmaking at its finest, with a great cast working from an exciting script in the hands of one of the best directors of the era, Michael Curtiz. The film is an accurate reflection on how Americans want to see themselves, namely fiercely independent while holding onto strong moral beliefs and always selflessly doing the right thing in the end. This sentiment is embodied in the films leading character, Richard "Rick" Blaine, played by Humphrey Bogart as the cynical expatriate saloonkeeper in Vichy-controlled Casablanca during World War Two. Despite the unassuming appearance, Rick is actually a heroic fighter of fascists, smartly dressed in a white ... Read Article

Casablanca on Blu-Ray

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 10:14 AM | From CanMag.Com
All right, here we go. Old black and white classics on Blu Ray. How is this going to turn out? We’re talking old film, tricky restoration in the best cases, full frame format and black and white. Don’t worry, Casablanca looks great.

Blu-ray Review: Casablanca
They didn’t go overboard and make it look not like Casablanca. There’s only so much clarity that ever existed, so they don’t add anything to it. Still, you’re watching the film in crisp clarity, with sharp black and white lines and no scratches, dirt or blemishes. It fills the middle of the HDTV screen nicely with solid bars on the side.

A few details that do pop out include the bumps on 3D globe that open the film, shiny sweaty brows that seem to light up your living room Read Article

Fan Made: 20 Films Recreated in LEGO

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 12:28 PM | From Cinematical

The original title of the post over on The Toy Zone is '20 Classic Films Recreated in LEGO', but when you have stuff like Serenity, The Ring, The Life Aquatic and Men in Black -- well, do we really consider those to be classic films? I sure don't, but that doesn't mean they're bad movies ... just not classics. Casablanca, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey ... I give you those. But the rest? Eh. Nevertheless, they have up scenes from 20 "popular" films recreated in LEGO and some of them are pretty damn cool -- like the one above which recreates one of the opening scenes from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

We snagged a few of our favorites for the gallery below, so check them out and let us know which ones you like the best. Personally, for me it's a tie between Star Wars, Alien, Casablanca and The Ring (I never thought a LEGO image would creep me out, but there you have it -- creepy indeed). Enjoy.
