Tuesday, November 17, 2009 2:16 PM | From Hollywood Chaos
Eek, looks like you don't have a friend in Australia, Britney Spears. And it looks like Australia (unlike the US) isn't a fan of a lip syncing performer. You get what you pay for, folks. And if you go into a Britney concert expecting a live performance, in dancing yes, singing? Come on... Read Article

Transformers Invade Australia (Very, Very Slowly)

Thursday, November 5, 2009 6:00 PM | From MTV Splash Page
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" already arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray here in the U.S., but it looks like the Autobots are doing a bit of world-traveling these days to promote its release elsewhere. At least, that's what some images from Australia that recently popped up on the 'Net would seem to indicate. Bumblebee was seen [...] Read Article

Green Lantern Pulls Out Of Australia

Friday, October 16, 2009 3:07 PM | From Latino Review
Let's get the boring part out of the way:Today, the Australian Dollar hit a 27-year high in its conversion rate to the US Dollar, which is doing horribly because of the global financial crisis. The US Dollar closed at $0.95, a 30% decrease in six months. What else happened about six months ago? Warner Bros, which holds the rights to DC Entertainment properties, announced that they would be filming a Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds in Australia. How much does 30% hurt a movie budget? It's estimated somewhere to the tune of $20 million dollars. As in: nothing outwardly changes and suddenly the movie is $20 million more expensive to shoot in Australia. No surprise then, that Warners has pulled the shoot out of the country and will most likely find somewhere else outside the US to shoot the flick, probably cheap-Canada or cheap-Mexico. Green Lantern was supposed to start shooting in November with Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) at the helm. Unless this move happened internally much earlier than when we caught wind of it, I'd guess that production might be slightly delayed. It looks like Australia isn't the land of cheap movies like it once was. The current Aussie shot film in theaters is Where The Wild Things Are and the only upcoming live-action film being shot there right now is Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. You can bet Australia won't be happy about this. Not that we ask about their feelings.Source: Trades Read Article

We recently reported that the upcoming DC Comics movie "The Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds, was set to start filming in Australia in two weeks, but had to go find a different location due to budget concerns. Even though the country offers tax incentives, its rising Australia dollar is said to have blown out production costs by about $20 million. Read Article

Green Lantern Production May Have To Ditch Australia

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 9:00 AM | From Cinema Blend
Plenty of movie productions, even those with no connections to Australia at all, have trucked off Down Under to take advantage of the country's tax breaks for film production. The Green Lantern was going to be one of them, but according to the website Inside Film, the tax breaks might not be as lucrative as they seem. Know from the outset that there is no named source in the story, and it's entirely possible that it's based on mere speculation ... Read Article

Another Period Piece Heads To Australia

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 11:56 AM | From Cinema Blend
Last fall Baz Luhrmann introduced us to the notion of a period drama set Down Under, and even though Australia didn't exactly set the box office on fire, man were those costumes gorgeous. And maybe we'll get a second chance with Spider Dance, which is, yes, a period drama set in Australia, this one directed by The Duchess helmer Saul Dibb. Dibb just signed on to the project, according to THR, which is about a young American woman who shocks ... Read Article

Stuart Beattie Adapts Mega-Successful Australian Book Series

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 2:14 PM | From /Film
Who knew that Australia had it's own Red Dawn? According to THR, Australia screenwriter Stuart Beattie (who also wrote Collateral, GI Joe and the story for Pirates of the Caribbean) is going to write and direct an adaptation of the novel Tomorrow, When the War Began. The film, which he calls "coming of age in a war zone," will be his directorial debut. The book is the first in a seven-novel young adult series by John Marsden which has become quite popular in Australia. The basic story follows an insurgent band of Australian teenagers who fight against an enemy invasion and occupation of their land. So, yeah, kinda like Red Dawn, not that the John Milius picture and its remake have any lock on the idea of kids fighting the guerrilla fight for their country. The film, which is set to shoot in September in Australia, is the first of a ... Read Article
