2012 Blows Up Global Box Office
Monday, November 16, 2009 11:20 AM | From CanMag.Com
2012 may just be a lot more explosive fluff from Roland Emmerich, but it pushed the effects envelope far enough to receive massive returns at the box office. In short, audiences just can't help but watch their home planet get annihilated with CG.
Box Office Champ: 2012
Claiming the ninth biggest global opening ever, 2012 picked up $225 million during its opening weekend, with $160 million of that coming from the international audiences; the fifth best international opening of all time.
Sony Pictures obviously has reason to celebrate, seeing that 2012 gave the studio their second box office victory in a row after This Is It. With the celebration also comes a sigh of relief, as Sony needed to find a way to make back the $200 million spent on the film plus all the marketing. Though domestic audiences were iffy, the studio knew to count on showings overseas, where disaster pics typically do well.

Roland Emmerich's 2012 had a sufficiently massive opening weekend, bringing in $65 million in North America, and $225 million worldwide proving that the disaster movie is far from dead. This makes it the 7th highest opening weekend in November ever. A Christmas Carol dropped to #2 with another $22 million, while The Men Who Stare At Goats held down the #3 position. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire jumped to #4 continuing to build buzz as it expanded to more theatres, and Michael Jackson's This Is It slipped to #5. Pirate Radio, on the other hand, had a rough opening all the way down at #11, earning just $2.8 million on almost 900 screens. Yikes.
1. 2012 -- $65M
2. A Christmas Carol -- $22.3M
3. The Men Who Stare at Goats -- $6.2M
4. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire -- $6.09M

People were starving for an "event" movie and 2012 was definitely that. Brad didn't love it, and I'm right there with him. It certainly had flaws. But it's been months since the last tentpole release, and timing was far more important than quality in this instance.
