Set in the 1980s, Cheerleader is a dark and quirky coming-of-age comedy that delves into the mind and world of sweet, naive cheerleader Mickey (Catherine Blades), as she desperately tries to make her cheating boyfriend jealous by dating Buttons (Chris Bert), a nerdy genius who ultimately helps Mickey transform from a stereotype into an original. Virtually every word Mickey utters feels genuine, not just in the way that this unlikely heroine speaks, but in the things she both knowingly and unknowingly reveals about herself along the way. First time writer/director Irving Franco has crafted a film that is funny, smart, satirical, and sad, all while being infused with a genuine knack for original teenage voices. Mickey’s story is brought to life with a sense of veracity and authenticity that pushes past every pre-conceived notion you have about a “high school film” to reveal the fully-realized three-dimensional world that exists inside these characters’ lives.
