Brothers Trailer (2009)

The trailer for Brothers.

When a decorated Marine goes missing overseas, his black-sheep younger brother cares for his wife and children at home—with consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family. Brothers tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirtysomething Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters (Bailee Madison, Taylor Grace Geare). Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who’s always gotten by on wit and charm. He slides easily into his role as family provocateur on his first night out of prison, at Sam’s farewell dinner with their parents, Elsie (Mare Winningham) and Hank Cahill (Sam Shepard), a retired Marine.

Tobey Maguire wanted to play Tommy, the brother who helps out his sister-in-law (Portman) while Jake Gyllenhaal wanted to play Sam, the marine who is thought to be missing. The director, Jim Sheridan, did not think it would be the right fit and did not think Maguire fit the “Bad” brother role. Gyllenhaal previously played a marine in Jarhead.

Prior to Spider-Man 2 being made, there were discussions that Tobey Maguire would have to be replaced due to his back problems. The first actor on the list to replace him was Jake Gyllenhaal.

Prior to filming, Tobey Maguire spent time at Camp Pendelton in Oceanside, CA to undergo some basic training with Marines.

Brothers Trailer Screencap

Films about members of the military returning home always provide an emotional punch and the trailer for Brothers is no different. While Jake Gyllenhaal played a Marine in Jarhead(2005), this time, he is the civilian brother to Tobey’s Maguire’s Marine. Natalie Portman plays Maguire’s wife who must deal with the death of her husband while also raising their two young daughters. Gyllenhaal helps the family out which of course leads to Portman and Gyllenhaal sleeping with each other because they are too beautiful not to, but everything gets crazy when Tobey comes back! He is not actually dead, but he sure is pissed. Dealing with his Post Traumatic Stress along with the reality that his wife has pretty much moved on to his hotter brother is tough.

The trailer is intense and has a lot of emotions to deal with in just a few minutes which may signify that this film is going to be distressing, to say the least. There is a lot of drama seen in the trailer and the three lead actors are all on top of their game. It may be the three leads that pull me in so much, especially Gyllenhaal and Portman who are so charming, warm and have so much chemistry that the casting is perfect. The little girls who play Portman and Maguire’s daughters are also promising actors which really round out a seemingly good movie. The trailer for Brothers is intense, dramatic, and fascinating with guaranteed stellar performances by some of the best actors in the business.
